Our Visit to Children’s

Monday, January 31st, 2011

I’m sure if you haven’t run into us just yet you’re wondering how our week went and more importantly what the outcome of visiting Children’s Hospital in Little Rock was, well good thing because I am here to inform you.

First off I want to send my appreciation to EVERYONE that sent us messages of support!  I was taken back at how many people had us in their thoughts!  Thank you, your support really means a whole lot to our little family!

TW took a half day from work which left me frantically scurrying about the house making sure I had packed everything we needed along with getting our little guy all ready to go.  I wanted to make sure I had my list of questions, all the paperwork from previous Dr. visits, the list of medicines he was currently taking, etc.  So then on top of all that TW calls me to ask if some random guy can come to our home and retrieve the freezer we had listed on Craigslist……not something I like to do without my husband home with me, let alone the fact that I was supposed to be leaving out the door in 30 minutes, but I said sure why not hoping to use the cash for our gas on the way down there.  In my mind I was preparing all the things I would do and say if it were the case that he wanted to come in our home and steal our possessions or perhaps try to murder me, you know all those crazy thoughts that run through your mind because of everything you see on the news.  (funny side note:  I planned on bartering with him if he wanted to steal my iMac…….”please don’t take my computer…..there’s a diamond necklace and earrings instead, oh and I’ll throw this ring in there too!”  (pathetic).  Sure enough random guy doesn’t show up until I’m practically out the door, ugh, but after sizing him up he seemed safe.  I decided I didn’t have time to wait around for him to load this freezer into his truck, so I locked our door and headed out.  I called TW and told him I left random guy at our house and I hoped my computer was still there when we got back.  This dumb freezer business was the last of my concerns at this point.

Ok so I head off to get TW from work and we start our trek down to Little Rock, Titan decided to be a bit fussy needing some attention which his daddy gave him in the back seat while I drove.  This didn’t lead to the conversation time I expected to enjoy with my husband before we arrived, but eventually Titan would fall asleep and TW crawled into the front seat with me!  Yay I was excited, until he reclined his seat and settled in for a nap.  All alone driving down the road my mind began to race and rethink all the awful things I had read about this disease my son has.  As I arrived in Little Rock and found Children’s Hospital all this time of being alone in my thoughts just poured out.  I started crying (I’m not a big crier) but I think I was overcome with stress and emotion of what I imagined would happen here in my head.  Maybe this little breakdown was good for me since I became a determined momma as I walked into that Dr’s Office.

We checked in, sat around in the waiting room for a while, then were called back to our room, spoke with a few nurses, took pictures of Titan, and finally were greeted by this amazing Pediatric Dermatologist who walked in, took a peek at him and stated he had Diffuse Cutaneous Mastocytosis.  He then asked his nurse to bring me some information and that he would see us in a few months.  I sat there thinking there is NO way this man is going to walk in for 5 minutes and send us home….I drove 3 hours one way just to get here!!!  So I said “wait a second, I have lots of questions for you”, his response….. “ok let me go visit this other patient and I’ll be right back”.  I’m in the service industry and was a little taken back by those words, but I blew it off thinking that a hospital setting was a bit different and you get seen by severity rather than how long you’ve been there.

Once the Dr. came back in we spoke for a long time, leaving me much more pleased with this whole experience (when we got back to the car we had spent a total of 2 hours there). We are very fortunate to have this Derm.  He was very laid back about this whole disease thing, in fact he even opted out on calling it a disease and insisted it was a “birthmark”  I liked that terminology much better!  He basically told us to not put him in a bubble and that we will just have to figure out what his triggers are and avoid them.  He said you can still rough house with him, maybe just not as hard.  I can’t describe how much comfort I felt having his professional opinion.  The Allergist we visited sent me into freak out mode when he mentioned that we may want to consider signing up for air evac!!!!!

So all in all Titan’s future looks like this:

He’ll be on several histamine medicines

He’ll occasionally break out in blisters

We will be making bi monthly trips to Little Rock

I’ll have to be crazy mom and know all the medicines he has to avoid in case we ever need to make a trip to the ER

I’ll have to be crazy mom and tell people that are wearing perfume that they can’t hold him

We get to buy expensive baby wash and detergent!  Oh goodie.

He will hopefully outgrow this by 12 years old if not sooner

He may just have to be a swimmer until then?

Out and About // Horse Races at Oaklawn

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

My husband randomly came up with the idea to go to the horse races for my birthday last Saturday… (by random I mean it was random he wanted to go, following a commercial on TV).  Don’t let me fool you, he LOVES horses and everything about being a farmer/cowboy just short of wearing the apparel everywhere (I just can’t have that).  I on the other hand…..not so big into the whole thing, but horse races?  I think I could do horse races since there are so many demographics there.  You get the rich people in the seats up at the top, the homeless people in the smoking section at the far end, and then the folks like us who have never been before and spent the entire time running from looking at the horses to making our $2 bets!  Speaking of bets…..this was my 25th birthday…..in order to place a bet you must be 18 or older…..I was carded twice!  ugh (I know I know one day I’ll be greatful for that, but that day  my friends is not today).  We really had a lot of fun.  It was a fun experience, but definitely not something I really plan on doing on a regular basis as I’m not a big gambler.  In fact it’s less painful to gamble birthday money!  :)

Bird Hunting // Arkansas Photographer

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Hey everyone.  A few days ago, Wednesday to be exact, TW threw the idea at me that he wanted to go bird hunting and asked me if he could go.  Now take into account please that I am very used to just getting up and going and doing what I want when I want and now I have been sitting at home all week with a gorgeous fussy baby.  :)   I told him no.  Background on my husband……he’s hardly ever home!  He is a football coach at a small school so you know what that means.  Wednesdays are usually the only day of the week that he’s home somewhat early and there was no way I was going to let him skip out on parenting duties……without me!!!  So in-laws to the rescue!  TW called up his momma and asked if she could watch Titan for us.  She arrived to pick up our darling little boy who loves to cry.  :)   She asked me if I was going to Little Rock again for a shoot.  Nope I replied.  Then she asked if I was going to stay and get some editing done.  Nope I replied.  Then with a puzzled look on her face I sheepishly explained that we wanted to go bird hunting.  (Neither of us are really big hunters).  I felt a bit guilty at that moment.  I just asked someone to take my kid to watch him so I could go and trudge through a field looking for birds…….  Well I quickly got over the guilt and enjoyed a somewhat fun afternoon with my husband (as fun as walking through a field gets).

This is the only shot I got of myself and it was really by accident.  Glad I got it though.

webIMG_1725

I don’t think I realized that a game farm just means they buy birds and then release them out in the open for you to come shoot……I guess I thought it was enclosed?

webIMG_1729

I think anytime my husband gets to go out and hold a gun he gets excited just like a 10 year old!  :)

I giggle like a little girl when I see this picture of Ellie.  We went out with Pointers that naturally hunt and find birds and I brought along Ellie who is a bird dog as well just a different kind (she supposably retrieves them -remember when I said we weren’t big hunters).  This picture totally describes what Ellie thought of the whole experience!  She truly had no idea why she was there or what she was supposed to be doing, all she knew is she was having a blast running through the grass, smelling all the new smells, and hanging out with all these new dogs she’s never met!  I love my Ellie!

webIMG_1759

Just a shot of the other two pointers that came along on the hunt.  I love their little beards!

webIMG_1773

Ellie was like the troublemaker in class too.  I think the best thing she did the entire time was distract the other dogs from hunting!  She just wanted to play that’s all!

My beautiful girl.

You’ve already met Winchester (AKA Winnie) if you’ve been keeping up with the blog, but this is TW’s beautiful girl.

We hunted until it was dark and I was able to capture this beautiful skyline shot!

Thursday Treats // DF Farms – Arkansas Lifestyle Photographer

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Hey there today’s Thursday Treats is going to highlight a new venture in my husband’s life.  As you probably know (if you know my hubby) he loves the farm.  This man is the kind of guy that wakes up on a Saturday morning at 6am after getting home late from a football game (prob 2am) and going to work on his families farm – The Dotson Ranch.  The Dotson Family and the Fuller Family- DF Farms have teamed up and purchased 20 preggo mamma cows.  Unfortunately one cow died already so we’re down to 19 but on the flip side we have 4 baby calves on the ground!  At first I thought it was a crazy idea but then I had an opportunity to head out the the farm with them this past Saturday and my thoughts changed.  My husband really does love farming and working and it was wonderful to see him get so excited about something, not just something but something that’s partially his!  I’m not as big of a fan of the snotty animals myself, I’ll stick to my Ellie and taking pictures of the rest of it all.  Now if anyone knows of a place for sale that would please both of us please let me know!  (Gotta be practically in town if not right outside and have lots of acreage for some cows!)  :)  Oh and by the lake would be a nice addition!

Something for Sunday

Monday, September 27th, 2010

I’m going to make an effort to make a weekly personal post about the Dotson family.  With a new little one, we’ll see how that actually goes!  :)  Technically this should have been posted yesterday but like I said with a little one we’ll see how that goes!

Sunday was the bridal fair in Rogers.  It was a lot of fun and made me wish I had actually decided to have my own booth, but then again I remember the reason I didn’t…..Titan.  I’ll be at the one in Springdale in January though, or at least that’s my plan right now.  I set up my photos of Creekwood Gardens at Lisa’s booth.

If you know anyone looking for a beautiful outdoor wedding venue and a great photographer…….I love to shoot at Creekwood Gardens!

IMG_0418

Not the best picture but following the bridal fair I met my little family at grandma’s house!  Weekly we usually end up at grandma’s on Sundays.  Little Titan had been there most of the day!  I’m pretty sure this was the longest I’d been away from him…..

bondfire

Well TW and I didn’t stay at grandma’s very long since he had to make an appearance at the 1st annual bondfire for Huntsville High School.  I’m pretty sure this was the kickoff to Homecoming!  I think that’s a super cool thing the school allowed them to do!  We never got to do anything like this when I was in high school!  It was really neat and a cool time for all involved in the football program to be recognized!  Let’s go Eagles!

Our Maternity Session!

Friday, August 6th, 2010

So the other day I made a post that I was taking a break for the day to have my maternity pictures taken by Ruthie……the gal that won our Free Mini Session a little while back……..

Here’s the results!  I  know you’re all dying to see what I look like now…..!  :)  Only 5 more weeks!

I just love this one with the Red shoes!!!  We decided that since Baby Dotson’s room is going to be Razorback themed we wanted some photos to put in there for him!!!  :)  Plus two U of A Alumni….what else would we have come up with?!?!?

Ding…….Turkey is done!

This last series was my favorite! A big thank you to Ruthie!  She did an amazing job!

We wish her the best in her future as a business!  Many happy fun and profitable years!  (I feel as if I’m giving a toast!)

Enjoy!

Tummy Tuesday!

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Hey there I know the much anticipated post for the day!  Today’s picture isn’t going to be good quality at all!  My gear was sent with Tanja to shoot our Jamaica wedding with Claire and Aaron and I rented gear for our wedding we had on Sunday with Alyssa and Seth at Pratt Place Inn and Barn.  My point and shoot camera that my mom got me for Christmas (it’s funny to me that I wanted a “normal” person’s camera) is with my hubby out in the woods on a horse somewhere for the week.  Leaving me with nothing but an iPhone camera for the night…….do you have any idea how hard it is to take a picture of yourself with one of those things?!?!?!?  Mission accomplished though!

Week 29:

How big is Baby Dotson this week? He weighs nearly three pounds now and measures about 17 inches. Though he’s getting pretty close to his birth length, he still has to chub out a bit. In fact, over the next 11 weeks, he’ll more than double — or even come close to tripling — his weight (oh wonderful……..). And as he grows and the room in this womb gets tighter, I will be less likely to feel those big kicks and more likely to get poked by an elbow or jabbed by a knee, which I’m not quite sure which I would prefer.  They say I’m supposed to be counting his kicks now and that there should be at least 10 movements within an hour……….I don’t think they realize we must have a soccer player on our hands because he kicks like 59.2 times an hour!!!!  Baby Dotson’s energy is surging, thanks to the formation of white fat deposits beneath the skin.  Baby Dotson is also settling into sleep and waking cycles, though — I don’t think they necessarily coincide with my own. Also this month, all five senses are finally functional, and the brain and nervous system are going through major developments.

We’d like to know what your thoughts for names are……..

We are looking for originality, nothing like Matthew, Tyler, or Andrew.

Also we aren’t interested in popular names like Hayden, Parker, or Peyton.

His middle name will be Jay (in honor of TW’s late brother who passed at 6 months old) and obviously his last name will be Dotson!  :)

And now for a pretty picture….

Baby Dotson is the size of a squash!

Tummy Tuesday

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Ok so obviously I’ve been a horrible little blogger recently!  My sincere apologies!  This seems like the only post where it is appropriate to vent and tell you what all has been going on in my life recently!  So as many of you know this has been a whirlwind of emotions and new things.  I’ve been starting a new job at the hospital where I will be working as a Diet Tech in order to get my foot in the door and start working on an internship of which I still have 3 years before I am no longer eligible to take the RD exam (for those of you who don’t know the lingo that’s quite alright…..RD is Registered Dietitian and I graduated with a degree that would allow me to be one after I complete an internship and pass the exam).  Anyways so that’s all been new for me and there have been days that I have had to be there at 5:30am which also you should know that involves just leaving my house at 4:30am!!!!  (Not to mention having to still get ready before that!)  So obviously with that I have been extremely tired.  Moving on…….my mother went on a school trip (yep she’s going back to college and did a study abroad program in Belize!) so it was my job to kinda look after things while she was gone.  Well Papa (my stepdad) was supposed to be going on this trip to visit her and vacation when the program was over, he was supposed to leave June 13th.  Obviously that didn’t happen since he is still in the hospital after what has been nearly two weeks recovering from pneumonia.  I called my mom when they moved Papa from regular care to ICU, I’ll admit I got a bit nervous being the only family that he has up here.  This was pretty stressful for me, maybe with a mix of pregnant hormones, I just felt like I couldn’t function.  So with that feeling I just sort of put my life on hold for about a week and stayed with him at the hospital.  All I could think was how horrible it would be to be stuck there and not be able to do anything or even see a familiar face, that was my motivation to spend hours upon hours sitting in an uncomfortable chair and walking through stinky hallways full of old men (the VA).   But now everything seems to be getting much better!  First of all my mom is back, that sped up his recovery I’m sure of it!  The whole day before I was supposed to pick her up from the airport, every time he would wake up he would ask if I went to get her yet or how much longer?  It was so cute!  Secondly I no longer have to be the one who sits at the hospital for hours!  Don’t get me wrong I’ve still been up there to visit here and there but I don’t feel guilty for leaving anymore!  My mom lives a block away so I’m certain she visits alot!  ;)  And finally I’ve had time to catch up with my life this week.  I’ve gotten lots of much needed editing done and now I’m posting my Tummy Tuesday shots!  Which is what this whole blog is supposed to be about anyways so let’s get rolling!!!

Ok so I think the last post I made was for week 24 which means I have weeks 25-28 for you!

Week 25 IMG_9157 IMG_6509 IMG_2182

Ok so we’ll start with week 28 on updates and if you are really interested in finding out what happened between week 24 to now you can go do the research yourself, sorry I’ve got bigger fish to fry right now (I hate fish?)

WEEK 28:

I’m pretty sure this starts a new trimester!  I can’t believe we’re already this far!  It seriously seems like yesterday we found out and then weeks later told our parents!!!!  We’ve been starting to get enrolled in some parenting classes and birthing classes.  That makes me quite nervous!  Oh that’s another thing I’ve been stressed about is thinking about how he gets out!  YIKES!

Baby Dotson is settling into the proper position for birth, with his head facing downward (toward my body’s nearest exit!). Our little work in progress is now about 2.5 pounds and almost 16 inches long (that’s huge!!!!). He’s busy adding new skills such as blinking to an already impressive repertoire of tricks like coughing, sucking, hiccuping (which I’m pretty sure I can tell when he has those!), and taking practice breaths. Baby Dotson’s sleep now includes the REM (rapid eye movement) phase — and that means he could be dreaming already (what do you suppose he’s dreaming about?). Though his lungs are nearly fully mature (which means we can breathe a little easier if he were born now), our baby still has plenty of growing to do.

And how could I leave you hanging without some sort of visual measurement?!?!?! …………Baby Dotson is equivalent to a Head of Cauliflower!

Also for anyone out there that had a natural birth I would like to hear your story.  Feel free to post it in a comment or email them to me if you’d like.  erikadotson@gmail.com

Enjoy!

-erika

That’s a relief!  I feel one less step behind now!  :)  Oh and tonight we’ve got our first baby shower!  Goodie!
