Arkansas Photographer’s Photo Tips

An inspiring idea

Don’t focus on faces!  :)  I know I know it sounds a bit crazy but think about it sometimes those fussy little two year olds don’t want their picture taken, or maybe that doggie won’t stay still long enough to get a good shot.  It’s crazier to just give up than miss that story telling picture.  Shoot low.  Crop off heads.  Focus on hands.  It’s ok I promise.  Not every shot has to be of people’s faces, now as I’m telling you this make sure you get some or you’ll probably loose lots of business quick!  Sometimes we don’t need a face to tell a story and that’s the kind of shots you are looking for!

Check out our next post for a few examples of storytelling shots!

Enjoy!

What I’m feeling // relaxed.

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

It’s Sunday, the day of rest… ahhhh.  No to-do list, no agenda, all I’m planning on clocking in is some quality couch time.  Movie butter popcorn + Hershey’s chocolate bar + Dr. Pepper + guilty pleasure movies = Me relaxed.  Yes, I have a stack of “too embarrassing to admit” movies on the floor that I plan on watching today.  Okay, okay, I’ll tell you… one of the movies is Clueless.  It’s a chick flick kind of day.

Arkansas Photographer / Purchasing a DSLR

Monday, November 15th, 2010

After our results have come in from our survey we’ve decided to take all the answers into consideration and now we’ll be offering some photography tips for you to get better photos.

What a better start than to answer the question I get the most…….“What kind of camera should I buy?”

First of all I’m a firm believer in not purchasing things above your means.  Now I of course didn’t come to this wise advice magically. I purchased my first camera, a Canon 30D (because I knew I was going to be a professional photographer and wanted to make a good investment), on credit and eventually my husband paid it off for me because it was best for our family but you better believe I paid every penny of it back to him sans interest of course.  From then on I vowed that I would always pay for my camera/lens purchases in cash.  So your first step is to figure out what your budget is.  (In case you didn’t know this should be your first step in anything……yes even in wedding planning!)

Secondly, why do you think you need a new camera?  When I want a new lens or any kind of new equipment I always stop and analyze what makes me want it and if I really need it.  I always ask myself “will this purchase improve my photography or do I want it just because it seems cool”?  After that point sometimes I decide to rent a lens that I’m interested in purchasing.  I can’t explain how important of a step this has been for me, especially when a new lens could be near $2,000!!!  Sometimes I really didn’t need anything new after all just needed a creativity boost, but let’s say I decide I needed something to help me improve.  Usually I’ve already done the research since I know what I want and I’ve got a huge wish list, but that’s your next step…..research.

Next, I would probably figure out what I was wanting out of a new camera.  Are you going to be pretty rough on your camera?  You probably don’t want to buy the cheap plastic cameras or lenses.  If you will be doing a lot of low lighting shooting, such as weddings, then I would recommend cameras that function better at higher ISO levels.

Fourthly, what exactly do you plan on doing with your photos?  Are you just wanting to print them out as 4×6′s for your personal photo albums?  Maybe you plan on just having better pictures for your blog and facebook?  Or are you wanting to display larger artistic prints in a gallery or your home?  Why does this really matter?  Well,  ”how many megapixels does your camera have” is another question I get asked quite frequently.  If you just plan on displaying them online megapixels really don’t matter.  If you are planning to print them unless you are going to be printing 20×30 or larger they don’t matter much here either.  Canon’s cameras right now are all 8 megapixels or more so most everyone should be covered.

Finally, ask for advice.  This is what I did when I first started and why I chose the camera I did.  It was perfect for the stage I was at, at the time.  If you follow someone and love to view their photos ask them what camera they use and how it’s working for them.  But I would recommend taking heed to the first few suggestions on purchasing a new camera before I go and ask a photographer “what kind of camera should I buy?”  You’ll most likely get much more help if you can be more specific and be able to explain what you want a camera for.  Here you can see my equipment.

Hope this helps.

Enjoy!

Bird Hunting // Arkansas Photographer

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Hey everyone.  A few days ago, Wednesday to be exact, TW threw the idea at me that he wanted to go bird hunting and asked me if he could go.  Now take into account please that I am very used to just getting up and going and doing what I want when I want and now I have been sitting at home all week with a gorgeous fussy baby.  :)   I told him no.  Background on my husband……he’s hardly ever home!  He is a football coach at a small school so you know what that means.  Wednesdays are usually the only day of the week that he’s home somewhat early and there was no way I was going to let him skip out on parenting duties……without me!!!  So in-laws to the rescue!  TW called up his momma and asked if she could watch Titan for us.  She arrived to pick up our darling little boy who loves to cry.  :)   She asked me if I was going to Little Rock again for a shoot.  Nope I replied.  Then she asked if I was going to stay and get some editing done.  Nope I replied.  Then with a puzzled look on her face I sheepishly explained that we wanted to go bird hunting.  (Neither of us are really big hunters).  I felt a bit guilty at that moment.  I just asked someone to take my kid to watch him so I could go and trudge through a field looking for birds…….  Well I quickly got over the guilt and enjoyed a somewhat fun afternoon with my husband (as fun as walking through a field gets).

This is the only shot I got of myself and it was really by accident.  Glad I got it though.

webIMG_1725

I don’t think I realized that a game farm just means they buy birds and then release them out in the open for you to come shoot……I guess I thought it was enclosed?

webIMG_1729

I think anytime my husband gets to go out and hold a gun he gets excited just like a 10 year old!  :)

I giggle like a little girl when I see this picture of Ellie.  We went out with Pointers that naturally hunt and find birds and I brought along Ellie who is a bird dog as well just a different kind (she supposably retrieves them -remember when I said we weren’t big hunters).  This picture totally describes what Ellie thought of the whole experience!  She truly had no idea why she was there or what she was supposed to be doing, all she knew is she was having a blast running through the grass, smelling all the new smells, and hanging out with all these new dogs she’s never met!  I love my Ellie!

webIMG_1759

Just a shot of the other two pointers that came along on the hunt.  I love their little beards!

webIMG_1773

Ellie was like the troublemaker in class too.  I think the best thing she did the entire time was distract the other dogs from hunting!  She just wanted to play that’s all!

My beautiful girl.

You’ve already met Winchester (AKA Winnie) if you’ve been keeping up with the blog, but this is TW’s beautiful girl.

We hunted until it was dark and I was able to capture this beautiful skyline shot!

What to Wear Wednesdays // Arkansas Portrait Photographer

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Today I decided to showcase a real EDP bride and groom in our What to Wear Wednesday series…..

Meet London and Darron who will be getting married May 14th.  (I can’t wait!) They have a super cute style!

Arkansas Wedding Photography London and Darron 2

So let me break down why this works…..

First of all she wore the most adorable cowgirl boots ever with cute little rosettes on the side along with a cut flowy navy blue dress that screams country chic.  And secondly she matched him up with dark wash jeans and a blue plaid button up (which you can’t see here) that was cowboy style – complete with pearl snaps!

This outfit works so well with the location they chose!  I love how they thought about how everything would coordinate together!  Great job guys!

Enjoy!

Thursday Treats // DF Farms – Arkansas Lifestyle Photographer

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Hey there today’s Thursday Treats is going to highlight a new venture in my husband’s life.  As you probably know (if you know my hubby) he loves the farm.  This man is the kind of guy that wakes up on a Saturday morning at 6am after getting home late from a football game (prob 2am) and going to work on his families farm – The Dotson Ranch.  The Dotson Family and the Fuller Family- DF Farms have teamed up and purchased 20 preggo mamma cows.  Unfortunately one cow died already so we’re down to 19 but on the flip side we have 4 baby calves on the ground!  At first I thought it was a crazy idea but then I had an opportunity to head out the the farm with them this past Saturday and my thoughts changed.  My husband really does love farming and working and it was wonderful to see him get so excited about something, not just something but something that’s partially his!  I’m not as big of a fan of the snotty animals myself, I’ll stick to my Ellie and taking pictures of the rest of it all.  Now if anyone knows of a place for sale that would please both of us please let me know!  (Gotta be practically in town if not right outside and have lots of acreage for some cows!)  :)  Oh and by the lake would be a nice addition!

Saturday Steal // Arkansas Wedding Photographer

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

The idea of Saturday Steal is pretty much just to give you (our fab readers) some awesome ideas!  :)  I sure hope you enjoy!

I think I’ll focus on Fall Weddings since it is just right around the corner!  :)

I just love when brides show up with bouquets like this with all the different colors and textures!

This bouquet takes a cue from the season and is a fragrant mix of white majolica roses, Scabiosa, sage, basil, rosemary, and lily of the valley.

MMMMmmmmmm…….Carmel apples!  Seriously!  Love it!

Chocolate- and caramel-dipped apples are set out in large copper kettles for departing guests to take with them at the end of the evening.

Totally love this idea, especially for all our southern weddings around here!  What a great option rather then renting  a bunch of white chairs!  Prob cheaper too!

Guests at this fall wedding sit on hay bails decorated with wildflowers from a friend’s farm in French flower pails.

What a cool twist on the bride’s entrance!  If you really have a southern themed wedding this is the way to go!

For this September wedding, the bride makes her entrance on farm owner’s hay wagon.

What a simple but beautiful cake!

Two tiers of the cake, by Elizabeth Loudon, are the mother of the bride’s chocolate cake recipe. Set on a stand trimmed with felt, the confection is covered with bittersweet chocolate frosting and dressed with roses, fiddleheads, and sandersonia.

I pretty much just planned your whole country themed fall wedding for you!  :)

Friday Favorites

Friday, September 24th, 2010

This was previously Monday’s Favorites but we collaborated and thought it would be best to blog our new Out and About section soon after the weekend.

Today’s Favorites are going to focus on engagements.  Have you ever heard of Lifestyle Portraiture?  Think about how much more personal your engagement pictures would be if you were doing what you as a couple normally do and enjoy!  Lifestyle Portraiture involves capturing you as you really are (of course in an artistic manner bc otherwise it would be considered a snapshot!)

I’m going to highlight a few examples of what I’m talking about with storyboards!

PillowFight

Would it not be so much fun to have a huge pillow fight with your honey?  I can’t wait for someone to come along and adore my idea!  Shoot we could even set up a bed outdoor during sunrise so we wouldn’t have to clean up all the feathers (of course we would have to find earth friendly feathers)!  - is there such thing really?

weekend warriors

Oh this would be the cutest session!  I can’t wait for a couple to come along that is super outdoorsy!  This would be the perfect session for them!!!!

I’ve done a few lifestyle sessions previously……..

IMG_6007

Cute vintage style date in an ice cream parlor!  This was such an adorable session!

dog date in petsmart

Or how about a doggie date at Petsmart!  This was a fun session as we ran in and out of the aisles hiding from employees bc we figured we would get kicked out if they knew what we were up to!

Let me know if you are interested in a Lifestyle Session.  What you aren’t engaged……so what let’s do a Just Because Session with the two of you!  Oh wait you’re single…..yea that’s not going to work…..just kidding!  Let’s do a Just Because Lifestyle Session with just you!  Are you an excellent baker and you want to document it?  Let’s go!

Enjoy!
